Should You Wash Your Face Before or After a Workout?
Makeup removal before, gentle cleansing afterward: arrange your skincare around a morning class, lunchtime session, or evening workout.

Wash your face after a workout that makes you sweat, and remove makeup before you exercise. If your face is already clean beforehand, you don’t automatically need another full cleanse just because you’re heading to the gym. Keep the washing gentle and arrange your usual skincare around the session.
That takes some pressure off the gym bag. You can pack what you’ll actually use without turning every class or walk into a second complete morning routine.
Why prioritize washing after a sweaty workout?
The American Academy of Dermatology’s face-washing guidance recommends washing after heavy sweating, alongside your usual morning and evening cleansing. Use lukewarm water, your fingertips, and a gentle cleanser; rinse and pat dry instead of scrubbing.
This is a reason to plan a washing step, not to buy a special “gym detox” product. A familiar cleanser that suits your skin is a sensible place to start. Don’t increase the amount or scrub harder because a workout felt particularly intense.
Your schedule matters more than the name of the exercise. A quiet stretching session and a sweaty spin class may leave you with very different cleanup needs. Build the routine around what you actually did, rather than repeating every step whenever you wear workout clothes.
What should you do before exercising?
Remove makeup before you begin. The AAD’s workout guidance says a makeup-removing towelette can do that job without requiring a separate full face wash beforehand. Use a remover that suits you and follow its instructions, including any directions to rinse.
If you’re starting the day with a clean face, there may be little to take off. You can save the longer part of your routine until after exercise instead of applying several layers immediately before washing them away.
For outdoor exercise, sun protection still belongs before you go. The AAD advises broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher, alongside shade and protective clothing. Follow the sunscreen’s reapplication directions. Planning skincare for afterward doesn’t mean postponing protection you need outside.
A simple after-workout face routine
Keep the sequence short: gently cleanse, pat dry, and follow with the leave-on products that belong in your routine at that time of day.
1. Have your cleanser and towel ready
Pack them where you can reach them without emptying the whole bag. A clean towel for your face is more useful than a stack of extra serums you won’t have time to use.
If you’re exercising at home, put your usual cleanser beside the sink beforehand. If you’re going straight from the gym to work, check whether the changing area has somewhere convenient to wash your face. That small bit of planning makes the routine easier to follow.
2. Wash gently
Use your cleanser’s directed amount on wet skin if that’s what its label specifies. Massage with your fingertips, rinse thoroughly, and pat dry with a soft towel. Resist using a scrub or brush to make the wash feel more thorough.
A leave-on face mist is a different kind of product. It can feel refreshing, but it doesn’t replace the cleansing and rinsing step. Likewise, adding toner over a sweaty face isn’t the same as washing it.
3. Choose the steps that fit the rest of your day
Follow with your moisturizer and any other appropriate products you normally use. Before going outdoors in daylight, include sun protection. You don’t need to pack every optional step for a quick lunchtime wash.
If a product causes stinging or irritation, stop using it. Don’t use exercise as a reason to push through discomfort or add new exfoliating products. Ask a dermatologist about persistent irritation or breakouts rather than treating a general routine guide as a treatment plan.
How to fit cleansing around your workout time
Use your exercise time to plan the routine, not to create extra steps by default.
| When you exercise | A practical way to arrange skincare |
|---|---|
| Soon after waking | Keep preparation simple, use outdoor sun protection when needed, and do your fuller morning routine after washing away sweat |
| During lunch | Pack a small, familiar cleansing-and-moisturizing kit; leave optional extras at home if they make the bag cumbersome |
| After work | Remove makeup beforehand, then cleanse after the session and decide what you need for the rest of the evening |
| Close to bedtime | Let the post-workout wash begin your evening routine rather than automatically doing two complete routines back to back |
This isn’t a fixed schedule for everyone. If you apply makeup again or become sweaty later, your needs may change. Follow product labels and any skincare instructions from your clinician.
For a morning class, the simple morning skincare routine can help you arrange the steps afterward. For a late session, use the evening routine as your starting point.
Where RENU Advanced fits after exercise
RENU Advanced Foaming Cleanser can fill the cleansing step if it is already a suitable choice for your skin. You don’t need to buy a separate cleanser simply because you use this one after a workout.
The directions in ASEA’s official product materials are straightforward: dampen skin, dispense 2–3 pumps into your palm, massage gently over your face and neck, and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Check your own packaging for current directions in your market.

The full system continues with Balancing Toner, Glow Serum, and Hydrating Cream. If your evening workout leads straight into your normal nighttime routine, that gives the products a familiar order. It doesn’t mean every exercise session needs all four steps, or that the system is an acne treatment.
If you like having a coordinated facial routine to return to after the gym, explore RENU Advanced. Choose it for the products and routine you want to use, rather than expecting an exercise-specific result.
Pack for the routine you’ll actually do
Start with a cleanser, a clean soft towel, your moisturizer, and daytime sun protection when needed. Add makeup remover if you’ll arrive wearing makeup. Keep each product closed securely and follow its storage instructions; don’t leave your skincare bag in a hot car.
When you get home, take the damp towel out of the bag and let the bag air out. Restock what you used so the next session doesn’t start with an empty bottle. Small practical habits make a familiar routine easier to keep.
If you’re showering as well, continue with the after-shower body-care routine. Your face and body don’t need identical products, but both routines can have a clear finish before you get dressed and move on with your day.
