A simple morning skincare routine starts with a gentle cleanse or rinse, moisturizer and sunscreen. If you enjoy a fuller routine, add toner and serum before your cream. Keep the products in order and leave time for each layer to settle.

That’s the whole idea. Below is the routine step by step, with how much to use and how long each part takes, plus a shorter version for the mornings when even five minutes feels ambitious.

The 5-minute morning routine at a glance

Step What to do Time
1. Cleanse Lukewarm water or a gentle cleanser 1 minute
2. Tone (optional) Press a little toner in with your hands 30 seconds
3. Serum (optional) Follow your product label 1 minute
4. Moisturize Follow your cream’s directions 1 minute
5. Sunscreen Apply as directed before makeup Allow time as directed

Timings are a planning guide. Your product directions and drying time matter more than finishing in exactly five minutes.

Step 1: Cleanse gently

Morning cleansing is about freshening up, not deep cleaning. Your skin has spent the night on a pillowcase, not out in the city, so you don’t need much.

  • If your skin feels comfortable, splash it with lukewarm water and pat it dry.
  • If it feels oily or you wore a rich cream overnight, use a gentle foaming or gel cleanser. Massage it in for about 30 seconds and rinse.

Skip hot water. It feels lovely on a cold morning but tends to leave skin feeling tight afterward.

Tip: Keep a clean face towel just for your face and pat, don’t rub.

Step 2: Tone (optional, but nice)

If you use toner, apply it after cleansing and before serum. Follow the amount on your bottle. For the RENU Advanced Balancing Toner, use about a teaspoon and press it into face and neck with your hands or a cotton pad. Let it absorb before continuing.

If you’re short on time or don’t own a toner, skip it. Your routine still works.

Step 3: Serum

Most serums go before moisturizer. Follow the amount on your label and smooth it on gently. The RENU Advanced Glow Serum directions specify one or two pumps for face, neck and décolletage.

Let the serum absorb before applying cream. This is a good moment to brush your hair or check the weather.

Step 4: Moisturize

Apply moisturizer after your lighter layers, using the amount on its label. For RENU Advanced Hydrating Cream, the directions specify a pea-size amount for face, neck and décolletage.

Use upward, outward strokes and don’t forget the sides of your face and just under your jawline.

Finish with sunscreen

Apply broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30 or higher as the final skincare step, before makeup. Follow its label for application and reapplication. RENU 28 and RENU Advanced do not contain SPF. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends including sun protection in your daily routine.

Where RENU 28 fits

RENU 28 goes right after cleansing, before toner. Other gels may have different directions. RENU 28 is a clear gel you smooth over clean skin; shake the tube, use enough to cover your face, and let it dry fully before the next step. Allow it to dry fully rather than rushing the next layer.

Your routine then looks like this: cleanse, gel, tone, serum, moisturize. For more on why that order works, see what order skincare products go in.

The shorter version for rushed mornings

On a rushed morning, leave out the optional layers:

  1. Rinse or cleanse.
  2. Moisturize.
  3. Apply sunscreen as directed.

That’s a perfectly good routine. The extra steps are there for the mornings you have time to enjoy them.

Want the routine planned out for you?

If choosing four separate products sounds like a chore, a set takes the guesswork out. RENU Advanced is a four-step routine made to be used together: a foaming cleanser, a balancing toner, a glow serum and a hydrating cream. The steps map exactly onto the routine above, and each bottle tells you how much to use: two to three pumps of foam, about a teaspoon of toner, one or two pumps of serum and a pea-size amount of cream.

It’s fragrance-free and works the same way morning and evening, so one shelf covers both routines. If you’re weighing it against a single gel, the RENU 28 vs RENU Advanced comparison lays out the differences side by side.

Make it a habit

The best routine is the one you do every day, so make it easy to repeat:

  • Keep everything in one place, in order, on the shelf by the sink.
  • Pair it with something you already do, like brushing your teeth or waiting for the kettle.
  • Start small. Keep the essentials and introduce optional products one at a time.

Once mornings feel settled, the evening wind-down routine uses the same products with a slower pace.

Common questions

Do I need to use cleanser in the morning?

Not always. If your skin feels comfortable when you wake up, a splash of lukewarm water is enough. If it feels oily or you used a rich cream the night before, a gentle cleanser gives you a fresher start.

How long should I wait between skincare steps?

Just until each layer has sunk in or dried, usually 30 seconds to a minute. Brushing your hair or putting the kettle on fills the gap nicely.

Can I skip toner?

Yes. Toner is a nice extra, not a must. Keep cleansing, moisturizer and daytime sunscreen; toner and serum are optional.

Is a morning routine different from an evening routine?

It can use the same products. Mornings are usually quicker and lighter, while evenings are a good time for a more thorough cleanse and a little more cream.
